Ans:- The trees have been chopped for various reasons as to obtain wood for fuel, manufacturing, construction etc.

Ans:- Children are planting trees in the picture 2 to create awareness on our responsibility towards nature.
Q.3. What does picture 3 suggest?
Ans:- Picture 3 suggests how rivers have been destroyed by dumping wastes such as agriculture, industrial etc.
Q.4. What does picture 4 suggest about water crisis?
Ans:- Picture 4 suggests that people lack access to water and experience water scarcity at least one month a year in many areas.
Q.5. What implications do the pictures (1, 3, 4) have for the environment?
Ans:- The loss of trees can cause climate change, soil erosion, flooding etc. This can also lead to decrease in ground water recharge. People can’t get enough water to drink, wash or grow crops and economic decline may occur.

Question-1. Describe the Jamun tree in at least five sentences.
Ans:- The Jamun tree was tall and stately. It had dark green leaves and twirling branches that clawed into the sky. It had knotty and gnarled branches. It had many visitors and it gave shade to the children. It bore abundant fruits.

Answer :– Ricky got an idea to build a Champion mejhi and it was he who suggested chopping down the huge jamun tree to get enough wood for their mejhi. And everyone agreed to this.

Answer :-When Ricky climbed up the tree he found a nest of two-young hawk-kites. The tree was a home for many creatures and cutting down the tree would be unfair. This made Ricky feel guilty and this changed Ricky’s enthusiasm for cutting the jamun tree.

Answer :- The Jamun Tree was a source of joy to the children.They loved to climb, play hide and seek and even took rest under the shade. The tree bore fruits in abundance that even the children from the neighbourhood would also drop in and enjoy eating them.

Answer :- Ricky, Jonak, Monpi and Tinky were excited to have a big mejhi for the upcoming Bihu festival as every year they had a small mehji. They wanted big mejhi as it would be the envy of all their friends in the neighbourhood.

Answer :- There were many creatures that visited the Jamun tree like Chirping sparrows, Squawking parrots, Squabbling magpies etc. Ricky and Jonak would build a bird bath, Monpi and Tinky, their sisters would fill it with water. The birds enjoyed splashing about in the cool water.

Question- 7. Do you think it is good to cut a tree for the sake of a festival? Give reason (s) for your opinion.
Ans:- Trees give us so much like fruits, shade,and most important fresh oxygen. Tree being in the environment is the reason for stability in other environment elements. There are a number of festivals in India and cutting trees for the sake of it would harm mother nature which will affect all the living creatures. One can celebrate the festival in a simple way by sharing joy and happiness without harming nature. So, it is not a good idea to cut trees for the sake of festivals.

I.Ricky, Jonak, Monpi and Tinky are children in the story ‘The Jamun Tree’.
The month is January. The Bihu festival is fast approaching. They are talking about making a mejhi. As you have read the story, dramatize their conversation into a play. The beginning has been given here.
Ricky: Let us build a champion mejhi this year.
Jonak: Yes, yes. A big mejhi.
Tinky: The biggest in our neighbourhood.
Monpi: Where will we get so much wood? Father will buy some but that will be just enough for a tiny mejhi.
Tinky: That’s true, mother uses a gas stove in the kitchen.There’s no fire wood in the house.
II. That night as the children got ready to go to bed, Jonak said, “We may have a small mejhi this year but I’m glad we didn’t cut the Jamun tree.” The others nodded happily.
That night Ricky dreamt that he had already chopped down the trunk of the Jamun tree.
Q.Imagine yourself as Ricky and write a letter to your grandmother, who lives in Kolkata, telling her how sorry you were for what had happened. You may begin your letter as below.
