Ans: Madurai was earlier known as ‘The City of Nectar’ or Madhurapuri.

Ans: It is believed that some venom had fallen on Madurai, from Lord Shiva’s snake. To neutralise the poison, Lord Shiva put down some nectar from his crescent moon. This is why Madurai is called ‘The city of Nectar’.
